Broncos top Super Bowl champion Seahawks in overtime
Wil Lutz booted the game-winning field goal in overtime as the Denver Broncos capitalized on a late interception to beat the Super Bowl champion Seattle Seahawks 17-14 on Thursday.
A low-scoring game in Denver saw the Seahawks rally from a 14-3 deficit in the fourth quarter, scoring 11 points to force overtime.
Seattle quarterback Sam Darnold, stymied all night by the Broncos defense and sacked five times, was picked off by Ja'Quan McMillian on the first possession of the extra session to set up the game-winning field goal.
It wasn't pretty for the Broncos. Quarterback Bo Nix connected on 17 of 27 passes for just 107 yards and Denver had just 30 yards and two first downs in the second half.
They gained just eight yards on their game-winning overtime drive, but it was enough. Denver improved to 4-2 as the Seahawks fell to 3-3.
Darnold connected on 27 of 51 pass attempts for 278 yards as the Seahawks dropped their second straight after falling to San Francisco on Sunday.
Darnold piloted an 11-play, 67-yard drive capped by running back George Holani's one-yard TD -- and Darnold's two-point conversion toss -- to cut the deficit to 14-11 with 3:37 left in the fourth quarter.
Denver appeared to have it sewn up when Kris Abrams-Draine intercepted a Darnold pass with 1:25 left in regulation.
But the Broncos were forced to punt, and Seattle's Jason Myers drilled a 34-yard field goal to tie it up with three seconds remaining.
Darnold's second interception of the night doomed the Seahawks' comeback bid.
"We have to take care of the ball. Sam knows that," Seattle coach Mike Macdonald said. "I'm proud of our effort, of everyone involved in the team. I'm proud of the connectedness of our team.
"However, there are things we need to get better at quickly.
"We know those things. They're in our control ... we have some work ahead of us, and we'll figure it out."
