Volkswacht Bodensee - Ramsay-Peaty to learn lessons for LA after missing out on Commonwealth gold

Australia's Sam Williamson completed a double of 50 and 100m breaststroke gold, shocking pre-race favourite Michael Houlie of South Africa, who had to settle for silver.

Ramsay-Peaty broke down in tears after he could only manage bronze in the 100m final on Saturday and cast doubt over his future in the sport.

The 31-year-old was hoping his power would prove pivotal in the shorter distance but he was well beaten by Williamson and Houlie and only finished third ahead of South Africa's Chris Smith by one hundredth of a second.

"Sometimes in that event, the harder you try, the slower you go," said the three-time Olympic champion.

"But you can train the hardest in the world, you can work the hardest in the world, but it doesn't really matter unless you're race polished, and I'm not. Unfortunately, it is like having a V8 with slicks on in the rain, and that's how it feels."

Ramsay-Peaty has been supported in Glasgow by his wife Holly Ramsay, daughter of celebrity chef Gordon Ramsay, who is expecting the couple's first child.

Since the 2022 Commonwealth Games, Ramsay-Peaty had taken time off due to mental health issues and also endured a high-profile family rift following his marriage to Ramsay.

Earlier in the week he cast doubt on whether the intense training required to compete at his fourth Olympics would be compatible with becoming a father for the second time.

On Monday, he said he was aiming for the Los Angeles Games in two years' time.

"I think my whole career, there's been a lot of ups and downs. I think that first two-thirds of it were very good and then I kind of just lost my way, lost my purpose in this sport.

"I think if you do something so long and you're chasing human excellence every single day, you're not really chasing it unless it actually breaks you, which it did.

"The only reason I'm here now is to enjoy this, really give myself the best shot to LA. There's obviously quite a lot to work on, but I'm not too fussed about medals."
