USA's Johnson gets new gold medal after Olympic downhill award broke

Breezy Johnson said Tuesday that she has been given a new gold medal for her triumph in the women's downhill after her first one broke while she celebrated on the podium.

American Johnson, who is in line for more gold in the women's team combined, watched her medal come apart from its ribbon clasp after she jumped around in joy at her first Winter Games title on Sunday.

"Yeah, they gave me a new one. I have to get it engraved though still. So that needs to happen," Johnson told reporters.

Johnson added that she had to give the old one back as "they don't let you have multiple of those things".

The 30-year-old is a huge favourite to claim her second gold medal in two days as she posted the fastest time in the downhill run of the team combined.

Johnson has been partnered with her close friend Mikaela Shiffrin, the most successful skier of all time who races her specialist event, the slalom, in Tuesday afternoon's decisive second run.

She said that she might hold off on jumping about on the podium should she win gold: "Unless I'm holding the medal, then maybe I'll jump".
