Struggling Rangers appoint Rohl as new manager
Struggling Scottish Premiership giants Rangers on Monday appointed Danny Rohl as their new manager to replace the sacked Russell Martin.
The German had ruled himself out of the race last week when former Rangers player Kevin Muscat appeared to be the front runner.
But it emerged on Sunday that no agreement could be reached with Muscat, currently managing Chinese club Shanghai Port.
Former Sheffield Wednesday boss Rohl, who has signed a two-and-a-half-year contract at Ibrox, has a huge job on his hands after a disastrous start to the season for the Glasgow club.
They are sixth in the Premiership with nine points from eight games, 13 points behind leaders Hearts.
"It is a huge privilege to be taking on the role of head coach at such an incredible club, recognised around the world," said Rohl.
"I know it has been a difficult start to the season, but there is still so much to play for in four competitions, and my staff and I will give it everything to reward the supporters and the club."
Rohl joined Sheffield Wednesday in October 2023 and led the English Championship club to a 12th-place finish in his only full season as a manager before leaving in July this year.
The 36-year-old previously coached at RB Leipzig, Southampton and Bayern Munich and was an assistant coach with the Germany national team.
Sporting director Kevin Thelwell described Rohl as an "exceptional coach".
"He has worked in some of the most demanding football environments in the world, where winning is the only expectation, and we believe that background has prepared him for Rangers," he said.
Martin, who had previously managed Southampton in the Premier League, was dismissed after just 17 matches in charge of Rangers.
It took the until late September to record their first win in the Premiership and they were humiliated 9-1 on aggregate by Club Brugge in the Champions League play-offs in August.
Former Liverpool and England midfielder Steven Gerrard had earlier ruled himself out of contention to return for a second stint as manager at Ibrox.
He led Rangers to the Scottish title in the 2020/21 season -- the last time they were crowned champions.
