Trump congratulates Democrats and signals willingness to cooperate
WASHINGTON: US President Donald Trump expressed Wednesday readiness to work with Democrats following their midterm election victory and control of both congressional chambers, seeking common ground on domestic and foreign issues. In an interview with US newspaper The Times, Trump congratulated the Democratic Party on its electoral performance, saying he looked forward to working with Democrats and believed agreement could be reached on several key issues.
However, Trump downplayed Democrats' ability to impose their legislative agenda, warning he would veto legislation he described as "crazy" and stressing that congressional control did not mean they could pass whatever measures they wished to. He also said that he had no plans to make changes to his administration, expressing confidence that cooperation with Democrats remained possible across a range of issues, including immigration, despite political differences between the two sides.
On foreign affairs, Trump told Fox News that the United States had yet to complete its mission regarding Iran and might take further action, identifying the Iranian issue as a factor behind the election defeat. Defending his decisions regarding Iran, Trump said they "were necessary," adding that Americans understood the importance of his administration's achievements in handling the issue, which he acknowledged had contributed to the outcome of the elections. —KUNA
