A home label-maker test selected Brother, Niimbot and Dymo models for different budgets and working styles.

A WIRED buying guide named the Brother P-touch PT-n25bt its best overall home label maker, with the Brother P-touch Cube Plus PT-P710bt selected as the upgrade option. The Niimbot B1 was chosen for portability and the Dymo Letratag 100H as the budget recommendation.

The tests covered on-device keyboards, companion-app design and Bluetooth printing where supported. Labels were placed on dresser drawers, toy bins, water bottles and lunchboxes, then exposed to water and heat for at least a week to assess fading and adhesive strength.

The guide distinguishes direct thermal printing, which heats special paper and may fade sooner, from thermal-transfer printing, which melts ink from a ribbon onto a label and usually produces more durable results. Traditional machines offer built-in keyboards, while Bluetooth models generally provide more templates and a clearer preview in a mobile app. Labels should not be used on clothing unless the tape is specifically intended for fabric. The Nelko P21 was also tested but required repeated calibration and placed some templates behind a paid app tier.
