Trailblazer Girmay to leave Intermarche-Wanty
History-making Eritrean Biniam Girmay will leave Intermarche-Wanty before next season, the Belgian cycling team announced on Friday.
Girmay, 25, joined the outfit in 2021 before becoming the first black African to win a stage on a Grand Tour at the following year's Giro d'Italia.
Last year he created history again clinching the Tour de France's sprinter's green jersey title after three stage wins.
"It has been a wonderful journey for me with Intermarche-Wanty," Girmay said without mentioning his future team.
"I am still grateful for the belief they showed in me five years ago and for giving me the chance to become a World Tour rider.
"Now it is time for a new chapter, I want to thank everyone at Intermarche-Wanty for the past five seasons," he added despite having a contract until 2028.
Girmay has been linked with a move to NSN Cycling, the team formerly known as Israel Premier-Tech.
After making history in the 10th stage of the Giro in 2022, he was forced to pull out of the remainder of the race.
While celebrating the victory he sustained an eye injury caused by a cork fired out of a prosecco bottle.
For next season, Intermarche-Wanty will merge with Lotto, with the first major race of the year at the Tour Down Under, in Australia, starting on January 20.
