Hyundai's French driver Adrien Fourmaux emerged from the narrow forest roads on the Rally Chile with a razor's edge one second lead on stable-mate Belgian Thierry Neuville on Friday.

Ott Tanak had been leading into the sixth and final stage of the day but suffered motor problems that forced him out of the race.

Toyota's Sebastien Ogier was right on their tail at 2.3sec as the Frenchman chases a ninth world championships crown in a tight four-way struggle for the title.

"I drove as fast as I could all day," said Ogier, just nine points behind current overall leader Elfyn Evans.

Also in a Toyota, championship leader with three races left after Chile, Evans himself sat fifth overnight 13sec down on the lead.

Finland's Kalle Rovanpera was off the pace after losing a tyre, but has much to fight for as he sits in second in the race for the championship.

There are six more specials on Saturday with rain and mist expected.
