Orioles axe manager Hyde after poor start: team
The Baltimore Orioles fired manager Brandon Hyde on Saturday following the Major League Baseball club's dismal start to the season, the team announced.
An Orioles statement said Hyde had been relieved of his duties and third base coach Tony Mansolino would take over as interim manager.
Despite a record of steady improvement in recent seasons, the Orioles have stumbled to 15-28 to start the current regular season campaign.
"As the head of baseball operations, the poor start to our season is ultimately my responsibility," Orioles general manager Mike Elias said in a statement.
"Part of that responsibility is pursuing difficult changes in order to set a different course for the future.
"I want to thank Brandon for his hard work, dedication and passion all these years, and for returning the team to the playoffs and winning an AL East championship. His many positive contributions to this organization and to Baltimore will remain, and we wish he and his family the best."
Hyde, 51, took over as Orioles manager after the team's calamitous 2018 campaign, when they finished with a 47-115 record.
Although Hyde oversaw three straight losing seasons from 2019-2021, the Orioles improved in 2022 to finish 83-79 before claiming the American League East title with a 101-61 finish in 2023.
