Los Angeles triplets weigh 19.3 pounds in unusually heavy birth

A South Los Angeles mother delivered three boys with a combined weight of 19.3 pounds, narrowly below the recognised record for heaviest triplets.

Nyla Craft gave birth to Elio, Elias and Enzo on August 18. Two of the boys are identical twins, and each weighed about six pounds. All three were born on their father Marco Bernal’s birthday. Their arrival expanded the family to seven, joining two older siblings.

Craft said she was relieved to hear each baby cry after delivery. Bernal and Craft later appeared with the newborns as staff at Kaiser Permanente South Bay Medical Center celebrated the successful birth. Rohit Passi, the hospital’s chief of neonatology, said seeing the babies safely with their family represented the purpose of the medical team’s work.

The boys’ combined weight remained below the record held by Evan Patrick, Aiden Cole and Lilly Kathryn of Englewood, Colorado, who weighed 22 pounds and 12.06 ounces in July 2003. A separate Guinness record for the heaviest individual birth dates to 1879, when Anna Haining Swan, who stood 7 feet 11 inches tall, delivered a baby weighing 22 pounds.
