Latest 'Spider-Man' tops American box office for 4th weekend
"Spider-Man: Brand New Day" is still riding high in the North American box office, topping ticket sales for the fourth consecutive weekend in cinemas, but sharply down from last week's performance.
The superhero film fronted by Tom Holland and real-life wife Zendaya brought in $39 million, down 45 percent on last weekend's take.
The latest Marvel blockbuster, which had the biggest debut weekend of all time at the domestic box office, has now brought in $854.9 million in the United States and Canada since its July 31 release -- and an additional $1.37 billion internationally -- according to industry watcher Exhibitor Relations.
Coming in second and also distributed by Sony Pictures was "Insidious: Out of the Further," which scared up a solid opening weekend of $25.3 million for the sixth installment of the horror franchise.
The movie, starring Amelia Eve, Brandon Perea and Maisie Richardson-Sellers, follows the story of a young woman who can bring spirits into the mortal world but is herself haunted.
"This is a solid opening for the 6th episode of a horror series," wrote David Gross in the FranchiseRe movie industry newsletter. "The drop from number five's opening in July 2023 is substantial but typical of these sequels."
Christopher Nolan's epic "The Odyssey" slipped to third, bringing in $19.5 million, down 17 percent in its sixth weekend, for a current domestic total of $539.1 million.
At fourth, Paramount Pictures' "Paw Patrol: The Dino Movie" took in $9.1 million, down 55 percent on last weekend's opening.
Warner Bros.'s sci-fi thriller "The End of Oak Street," starring Anne Hathaway and Ewan McGregor as a couple battling to survive when their neighborhood is transported back to prehistoric times, brought in $9 million, down 57 percent.
Rounding out the top 10 were:
"Mutiny" ($7.5 million)
"Tony" ($5.0 million)
"Spa Weekend" ($3.1 million)
"The Fast and the Furious" ($3.1 million)
"Teenage Sex and Death at Camp Miasma" ($1.9 million)
